The Eye

2012. The Eye, The Roundhouse, The Guardian and Fuel Theatre (Bodypods series)

The Eye is the fifth in a series of podcasts called Body Pods. Each podcast has been made by an artist in collaboration with a scientist, exploring a different part of your body. The Eye has been made by artist Silvia Mercuriali and Dominic Ffytche, Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London.

Body Pods is co-produced by Fuel and Roundhouse, and the UCL Ear Institute and is available as the Guardian Culture Podcast. To find out more visit fueltheatre.com.

I have composed the sound design, the little tunes, performed the various instruments performances audible during the story, and supervised the audio production throughout. I have used 3D binaural sound diffused by headphones to expand acoustically the imaginary journey Mercuriali designed for the exploration of our eyes.

Some attempts to sonic movement design can be found, like in the climbing of the Homunculus, or in the movement of the eye, or -the most successful- when you visualise the light mark on your retina. The sound image is morphing according to the possible predicted or instructed movement of the participant. Overall, these effects are contained to just give space to the story and as well because applied to complex acoustic recordings.

You can listen and try yourself the show from this link. You will need to wear headphones and to get hold of a mirror. Enjoy!
