2012. Jam Tomorrow, Linbury Studio, The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden
This is a score for 12 instruments ensemble and tape, written on commission from The Royal Opera House, for their educational projects Chance to Dance. In collaboration with choreographer Kristen McNally, the work has been performed at the Linbury Studio in May 2012 by soloists of the Royal Opera House Orchestra and conductor David McCallum.
The experience was wonderful, in particular coming back to work again on writing a score for orchestra. I had also the interesting opportunity to combine the orchestra scoring with a tape recording technique, for further effects and fun results.
Following Kristen desires and imaginative choreographic-story, I have designed a score for the children to dance to full of rhythms and elegant but easy to remember melodies. I have chosen to use an unorthodox ensemble configuration of several soloists, using tuba bass, harp, clarinet, flute, viola, cello, and percussions, keeping out more usual elements such as violin or piano.
My desire was to find timbre that would catch immediately the ear of the children and provide straight away the context for making the imagination flow.
The tape content, synchronised with the ensemble with an impeccable performance by conductor David McCallum, consisted of several backing tracks and sound designs, to support the core musical elements played by the orchestra or to add essential characteristic sounds (the sound of the clock, of the water, of footsteps). All these elements were often used as musical elements, for example like the intro song of the clock, in which the rhythmic section is entirely made with footsteps to underline the electric synth and the ensemble interventions.
